Migration Poem

No green grass on which to feast,
Whined a wild wildebeest…

No more flowers on our trees,
Cried a buzzing bunch of bees…

It’s too cold to flit and fly,
Sighed a bright blue butterfly

What should we do?
How can we live?
When environments,
Cease to give…
Conditions change what’s on our plate,

It’s time to move! We must migrate!
Migration’s moving,
Swim, run, fly,
From a place too cold or dry,
To a place where food is found,
Migration’s moving to new ground!

What is Migration?

Migration is the movement of animals from one place to another.
Almost all species of animals migrate, including types of birds, mammals, fish, insects, amphibians, crustaceans, and reptiles.

Migration is usually spurred by a change in seasons, which brings a change in the climate and availability of food and water.

The largest mass migration of mammals happens in Africa where over a million wildebeest join over 200,000 zebra, 350,000 gazelle and other mammals as they move to areas between Tanzania and Kenya where food and water is more abundant.

Animals that can fly can make the longest migrations, and the Arctic Tern takes the record for longest distance, as each year they make a round trip migration of about 44,000 miles (71,000 km) from Greenland to Antarctica.

Monarch butterflies also migrate to warmer locations in the winter. Their longest migrations can be 2,500 miles (4,023km) as they travel to Mexico and California.
