(stunning new images of Pluto from New Horizons, NASA)
Is Pluto a planet?
Back in the old days when I was going to elementary school, Pluto was the ninth planet from the sun. Unfortunately, the "planet" label for Pluto has been revoked and it is now considered a dwarf planet. Alas, it still orbits the sun like our Earth, but it has not "cleared its neighborhood" which means it is not necessarily the dominant gravitational force in its orbital zone- there are some other big objects floating around on their own.
In July of 2015, NASA's New Horizons space probe made a fly-by of Pluto -when it took amazing new pictures and collected new data about the dwarf planet.
